The word metal is derived from the Greek language where it means mine or quarry when translated into English. In general, metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Metals are ductile and malleable. By being malleable, it is meant that they can be hammered into sheets whereas ductility means one can draw them into wires. These substances have the capability of being chemical elements or alloys like iron and stainless steel respectively. This is worth knowing about AZ metals.

The term metal is defined in various ways depending on the matter for which it is considered. In Physics, metal is defined as materials that are capable of conducting electricity at absolute zero temperature. A lot of elements and compounds usually become metallic when subjected to extreme pressure and are not classified as metal. An example is where iodine becomes metallic when it is subjected to pressure levels that are between 40 and 170 times of atmospheric pressure.

The earth crust comprises of 25 percent of metal. Metal is very common in nearly all aspects of life because of its abundance. Various metals have dissimilar properties and this is the reason for some being more useful than others. In general, a lot of strength and resilience is exhibited by metal. This strength makes them to find use in the building of high-rise structures and bridges.

Aircrafts, stationery, utensils, furniture, vehicles, tools, pipes, and home appliances are examples of products made from metal. Anciently, coinage was done using precious metals. However, this has now extended to a minimum of twenty three elements on the periodic table.

The use of copper is often thought to be the beginning of the history of metal. This happened some 11 thousand years ago. The use of bronze was introduced in the 5th millennium BCE. Before bronze was introduced, other metals such as lead, brass, iron, gold, and silver were already in use. Early forms of steel were then invented before sodium was discovered in 1809 as the first light metal.

A lot of products and processes started using sophisticated forms of alloy following the Second World War. If a compound contains more than one element and one of the elements is a metal, the compound is called an alloy. Alloys are metallic in nature with metallic properties. The compositions of an alloy may be variable or fixed based on chemical elements it is made of.

There are various reasons why making alloys is important. The pure form of metal tends to be chemically reactive, too soft, or brittle to be used in that form. That is why making alloys is essential. When one combines different ratios of metals, they will end up with a substance whose metallic properties are different from its constituents. Alloys are made so as to make them less brittle, corrosion resistant and harder.

The color or luster of alloys is also more desirable than that of a pure metal. Iron alloys are very many and they are the most commonly used even though others exist too. Abundance is measured by quantity and usage. Common alloys of iron include cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless and tool steel are some of the regular alloys of iron.
