Asbestos is a name used to refer to six naturally-occurring silicate minerals. Eponymous asbestiform characteristic usually cuts across all the six minerals. The decline was caused by the knowledge that the material caused several health problems when one is exposed to it over a long time. It was subsequently banned by many government across the world.

Two major types of asbestos exist today. The two categories are serpentine and amphibole and each has various types. Chrysotile is the only individual classified under serpentile. In exists in various places around the world in serpentinite rocks. When observed under microscope, this rock indicates to have white fibers.

Chrysotile is the most commonly used type of asbestos in the United States. It accounts for more than 95 percent of all asbestos used in buildings in the United States. It has more flexibility compared to amphibole varieties, which allows it to be woven to make fabric. Its use dominated in the making of roofs, cement, floors, walls, and ceilings, especially in outdoor environments. Other items and structures that were made using Chrysotile are gaskets, residential shingles, floor tiles, fire barriers, brake linings, pipe insulations, and high-temperature equipment.

Tremolite, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, and actinolite all fall under amphobile category. South Africa is known to have large amounts of amosite and the country produces it on large-scale. Bolivia, South Africa, and Australia are known for having large amounts of crocidolite, which is also fibrous in nature and blue in color when observed under microscope.

Generally, asbestos is known to be a human carcinogen. There is a wide range of serious health hazards that are caused by the material. Crocidolite and amosite are the most hazardous fiber types of these material available. Chrysotile has also been observed to cause malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis in humans.
