What You Need To Know About Wet Tapping

Basically, wet taps and hot taps are usually synonymous and they describe a process where a hole is cut in an existing pressure main. A tapping valve and sleeve are normally used to help in cutting the hole while the under pressure offers a permanent branch connection. Generally, wet tapping can be done on pipes of all types and under various flow and pressure conditions without interrupting the system.

The process of installing the wet taps allow the professionals to provide tie-ins or supplementing modifications on the systems already in place. The system could either be pressurized or serviced without any interruption on the system. This results in customers saving a lot of money that is normally involved in system shutdown and cutting mechanical tee.

During the cutting of the hole on the available main, the size to be cut depends on what service is required. The whole process utilizes a custom designed fitting with a valve whose purpose is to monitor the new connection, pressure in the system and a drilling machine to cut the pipe. It can carried out on any kind of pipe. For example, steel, cast iron, ductile, asbestos, copper, PVC, concrete and cement. The whole procedure is big on saving money since it does not shut the system down.

During installation, mounting of the tapping sleeve is usually performed on the main. The type of the sleeve used depends on the system requirement and the person overseeing the system. After mounting has been done, a permanent valve is usually installed and pressure test on the newly installed material is performed. This is usually done to ensure the integrity of the system is maintained.

Upon verification of the integrity of the pressure, the machine gets attached to the valve. A hole is drilled into a tank, a main or a vessel that has been pressurized. This is dependent on what application was used. The tapping machine is passed through tapping sleeve and valve. Thereafter a bit cutter is mounted to the shaft then drills a hole onto the pipe. The cut pipe is detached from the main and valve, closed and then the machine is shut down.

The wet taps are usually installed in sewers and water mains in commercial and residential services. They make it possible for installation of new connections without interfering with the flow of the product as well as shutting down the service. A difference between wet and hot taps is that hot taps are installed on other products apart from water and sewages. Hot taps are installed in industrial settings such as hospitals, refineries or chemical plants.

However, the process may not work successfully because of several reasons. Such reasons may include incompatible materials and equipment, inexperienced personnel, and pipe materials that have not been recommended or that are difficult to install the taps. To avoid the problems, use equipment, material, and services from the same manufacturer.

Nevertheless, when hiring a company to do the task, it is essential to look for a company with substantial experience in providing the service. Again, the service provider should provide safe and cost-effective ways for repairing and modifying the pipeline without shutting down the system.
