Among the mechanisms put into utility in various industries to transport liquid and granular materials for a number of processes is the screw conveyor. Sometimes, the term auger conveyor is used it reference to this system. It was invented a long while back by Archimedes, a Greek scientist. The machine presently enjoys much popularity and utility in a number of commercial and industrial applications.

Although there are several different kinds of screw conveyors, the most commonly used is the horizontal screw conveyor. It is used in conveying bulk materials from one part of a process to another. These systems are constructed in a wide variety of sizes, lengths, configurations, and materials. Stainless steel screw conveyor systems are popular since of the materials used to make these systems is steel. The inlet of the conveyor system is usually control fed by another device such as a screw feeder, rotary airlock, gravimetric feeder, or belt conveyor.

The drive unit is typically installed on the discharge end of the system. This end is recommendable because it is the one that pulls the bulk material to the drive end. This arrangement ensures reduced wear and tear of the components of the system by ensuring that every section of the conveyor is exposed to tension generated by material being conveyed.

There are several advantages that are associated with screw conveyors. First, they are ideal for conveying dry and semi-fluid bulk materials. Also, in comparison to other conveying systems such as aeromechanical, pneumatic, and belt conveyors, auger conveyors are more cost effective. The presence of multiple discharge and inlet points allows for efficient distribution of bulk materials. Lastly, the system is usually totally enclosed from corrosive, dusty, or corrosive environments.

An additional type of screw conveyors is the inclined conveyor. It is often used at an angle from the horizontal line. The angel of inclination can be as high as 45 degrees or as low as a few degrees. If the angle is in excess of 45 degrees, the system is deemed as vertical and not inclined any more. The KWS engineering Guide for vertical conveyors is to be used to set up vertical conveyors.

Increasing the inclination angle often increases reduces the efficiency level and increase horsepower requirements. This reduction is caused by gravity effects of bulk supplies falling back. The type of conveyor being used and the characteristics of the materials that are being conveyed are factors that impact efficiency. Keeping the inclination angles at lowest levels is recommended to achieve higher efficiency.

Shaftless screw conveyors are another popular kind of conveying systems. This conveying system is used to convey material from mixers, filter presses, and centrifuges. The material used to convey on this system would otherwise be hard to convey on other systems. Materials with a lot of moisture are also conveyed much better using this system. Clogging does not happen in this system if design is done well.

Some of the industries that use shaftless conveyors include chemical, minerals, and food processing. Wastewater treatment industries also find a lot of use for these conveyors. There are several design standards for this system that producers follow to produce good systems. The standards may vary from one country to another.
