Payload of an aircraft may include cargo, munitions, flight crew, scientific instruments, and the passengers. It is mainly expressed in weight. In most cases, the size and type of commercial payload space transportation industry allows varies with the size and the type of an aircraft. Just like the ordinary vehicles, aircrafts have room for baggage and passenger seats. However, in aircraft, the payload is highly regulated to ensure it flies, takes off, and lands safely.

Filling an aircraft with fuel, cargo, passengers, baggage, and other goods without considering its payload can results into plethora of problems. The engine may experience some difficulties when trying to lift the plane up. For any plane to balance well, it should have a certain amount of fuel, cargo, and passengers. They also need to be placed within a particular location. Loading very heavy stuffs can cause the damage to the whole structure.

There are around five aircraft weights. Basic weight is one of them and it comprises aircraft weight. Dry operating weight comprises pantry, basic weight, and crew. Basic weight, take-off fuel, pantry, and the crew make up the operating weight. The components of zero fuel weight are basic weight, pantry, crew, cargo and mail, passengers and baggage. On the other hand, take-off weight is composed of components such as basic weight, pantry, crew, cargo and mail, passengers, baggage, and take-off fuel.

Aircrafts are usually weighed individually. The findings show that no two aircrafts can have the same weight. The engines, airframe, unusable fuel, and full oil tanks are included when the weight of an empty aircraft is being calculated. The weight of fixed equipment is usually made up of toilets, seats, galley, bottles, and oxygen masks.

The pantry is commonly used while different weights within an aircraft are being calculated. This is actually the food, the drinks, and the utensils used by the passengers and the crew. In simple terms, pantry may include hot water, coffee pots, biscuits, and other related commodities. Although a few of these items have negligible weight, their total heaviness and location can have a huge impact on the trim of a plane. This load is also used during calculation of the operating weight.

Block fuel is actually the amount of fuel put into a plane before the commencement of any motion. Taxi fuel refers to the fuel used as a plane moves along the runway. Take off fuel is what remains when the taxi fuel is subtracted from the initial fuel (block fuel). During the flight, the amount of fuel consumed is known as trip fuel.

Total traffic load is usually composed of baggage, mail, cargo, and the passengers. The payload is actually the allowed traffic load. Underload is normally arrived at by subtracting the total load from payload. Underload indicates the amount of space that is still available for loading.

For any special loads or dangerous goods to be transported onboard it is important to ensure that NOTOC is completed. The weight, description, and location of these types of loads should be clearly noted. This is done in order to promote the safety. Examples of special goods are: perishables, human beings, live animals, and food stuffs.
